The Rogowski Coil is a sensor used for measuring alternating current, based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, and has the characteristics of non-contact, wide frequency response, and high linearity. According to different design and application requirements, Roche coils can be divided into the following categories:
1. Classify by structure
Split core Rogowski coil
Features: The coil is designed as an open-ended circular structure, making it easy to install onto running wires without disconnecting the circuit.
Application: Commonly used for on-site power system monitoring, fault diagnosis, or temporary measurement.
Disadvantages: The opening may introduce slight errors, and the long-term stability is slightly lower than that of the closed type.
Solid core Rogowski coil
Characteristic: The coil is a complete closed loop, and the wire needs to be disconnected and passed through the coil during installation.
Application: Laboratory, high-precision measurement, or fixed installation scenarios.
Advantages: High precision, good stability, but low installation flexibility.
2. Classify by material
Air core Rogowski coil
Features: The coil has no magnetic core inside, relies entirely on air medium, has excellent linearity, and is suitable for high-frequency measurement (MHz level).
Application: High frequency current detection (such as power electronic switches, RF equipment).
Magnetic core Rogowski coil
Features: The coil is wound on a magnetic core (such as ferrite), which can improve low-frequency sensitivity, but high-frequency performance is limited.
Application: Low frequency current measurement (such as power frequency power systems).
Hybrid Rogowski coil
Features: Combining hollow core and magnetic core design, balancing high-frequency and low-frequency performance.
Application: Broadband scenarios (such as testing new energy inverters).
3. Classify by application scenario
Rogowski coils for power systems
Features: High voltage resistance, high current (kA level), strong resistance to electromagnetic interference.
Applications: power grid current monitoring, relay protection, fault recording, etc.
Roche coil for electronic devices
Features: Small size, high sensitivity, suitable for high-frequency signals (such as MHz level).
Application: Switching power supply, frequency converter, semiconductor device testing, etc.
4. Classify by signal processing method
Passive Rogowski coil
Features: Directly output induced voltage signal, requiring external integration circuit or dedicated integrator processing.
Advantages: Simple structure and low cost.
Active Rogowski coil (integrated)
Features: Built in integrator and amplifier, directly outputting standard current or voltage signals.
Advantages: Easy to use, stronger anti-interference ability, suitable for long-distance transmission.
5. Special types
PCB Rogowski coil
Features: Made through printed circuit board (PCB) technology, high precision, small size, suitable for integrated equipment.
Application: Embedded current detection in electronic devices (such as server power management).
Flexible Rogowski coil
Features: The coil is made of flexible materials (such as silicone wrap) and can be bent to adapt to complex spaces.
Application: Narrow spaces or temporary measurements (such as electric vehicle battery monitoring).
